Reader Tip of the Week: Weed in this reader tip

Katie Crawford of Paducah, Ky., has a killer idea for getting rid of those annoying and unsightly sprouts that shoot up between your sidewalk cracks or the borders in your driveway. “I put salt on unwanted grass in cracks and crevices and either water it or let it rain on it,” she says. “It’s less expensive than a chemical spray, and it kills it right off.”

She recommends the coarse salt used in wintertime to cover sidewalks.

Your comment about using salt may be a good one, but if you use the salt used for melting snow it could pit your concrete. Dalt in the cracks could cause the cement to werken and break off making for big holes.

  2. Scott Rausch says:

As a previous reader has commented, salt will pit and weaken the concrete, resulting in the eventual need to replace it. A better option to kill weeds in areas where weeding does not work is to pour near boiling water on them. They show wilting effects in a few minutes or less and die typically within 24 hours. This works great on plants with long tap roots such as dandelions. It also works on ant colonies that are living under concrete. An especially good time to treat them is when they are swarming prior to finding a new home.

  3. Pat Parker says:

I too wanted to warn reader that putting salt on concrete and brick will ruin them . I have had friends that had to replace new steps due to using rock salt in the winter on them.

  4. Keth says:

The suggestion that using salt to kill weeds is both environmentally irresponsible and ineffective. Salt is highly water soluble. When it rains or the sprinklers come on, the salt moves with the water down the driveway, into the lawn or flower bed, into the gutter and eventually ends up in streams and lakes. As the writer mentions, the salt leaches into the soil as well, killing not only the weeds but any other roots it comes into contact with…..like tree and shrub roots.

I agree with Keith; using “ice melting” salt is not a good idea. Anyone who has a well can contaminate their (and their neighbors) drinking water supply. I live in a northern state on a busy state highway. My DOT uses salt to treat our roads during the winter. My well was contaminated with road salt; as was many of my neighbors. All of my fixtures including my washing machine and my dishwasher were ruined. The state had to replace all of our wells. There are better choices. check with your Cooperative Extension and learn more about the chemicals you use in your home.

  7. Diane Starkey says:

Salt is a BADDD idea! Vinegar, white or cider, is much better to kill cracked pavement weeds. Heloise hint! I’d check with a pavement contractor or an engineer to see if it damages concrete or tar pavement, and to dilute it, (it comes at 5% acidity,) with water, down to 1/2 if necessary. Its acidity will change the soil and kill EVERYTHING you use it on, but only TEMPORARILY! THAT’s why it’s earth-friendly.
    Yours,
    Best wishes.

  8. Kevin Jones says:

Table Salt ( ionized salt) will destroy concrete, salt for melting snow will not. The runoff from this much salt on a sidewalk or driveway will be negligible as far as getting into the water table or drinking water.

He was totally right. This post truly made my day.

You cann’t imagine simply how much time I had spent for this information! Thanks!

  10. Ron Putman says:

Please do not use salt on your concrete driveways and sidewalks, it will ruin the concrete. It will eat into the concrete and leave poc marks and pits. A better thing to use is sodium chloride!!

nEVER HAVING A GARBAGE DISPOSAL,I FOUND OUT YEARS AGO TO PUT FOODS READY TO THROW OUT IN MY BLENDER, SMALL AMOUNTS AT A TIME AND FINISH FILLING THE CONTAINER WITH WATER AND TURNING IT INTO LIQUID AND THEN POURING IT DOWN THE DRAIN. OF COURSE, NO BONES OR HARD ITEMS. WORKS LIKE A CHARM. REFRESH THE SINK DRAIN OFTEN WITH BAKING SODA POURED INTO DRAIN, FOLLOWED IN A FEW MINUTES WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. ALSO WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
